1
WHAT IS KING COCONUT?
King coconut is the water contained in a variety of bright orange colored coconut (cocos nucifera var. aurantiaca) which is indigenous to the tropical island of Sri Lanka. Being the premier, or “king,” of coconuts, in terms of its water, king coconut is filled with electrolytes, is refreshing, rejuvenating, healthy and delicious.

Sri Lanka boasts of a higher square area of king coconut cultivation than any other country in the world, and given that, in Sri Lanka, king coconut trees grow with little or no human intervention, their cultivation does not involve the use of fertilizers or pesticides.

WHAT IS SRI LANKA AND WHERE IS IT?
Sri Lanka, rated among the top ten tourist destinations of the world, is a tropial island-nation located in southern Asia. It is famous for its beaches, wild life, spice gardens, mountainous tea plantations and ayurvedic health resorts.

The English word ‘serendipity’ (meaning ‘a happy accident’) is derived from the ancient legend of the Three Princes of Serendib and their experience on the shores of the island of Serendib, a name by which Sri Lanka was once known.

Having also been known as ‘Ceylon,’ ‘Seylan’ and ‘Lanka’ in the past, Sri Lanka has a rich history which dates back to 600 BC.

Today, Sri Lanka produces some of the finest tea (known as ‘Ceylon Tea’) and the most pungent cinnamon in the world!

HOW IS KING COCONUT DIFFERENT FROM THE REGULAR GREEN COCONUT AND WHY WOULD I DRINK IT?
King coconut is used exclusively as a beverage, while the green coconut (cocos nucifera) has multiple uses, including the use of its kernel in food. Most coconut water brands use the water taken from mature green coconuts, while we, at Tropic Fruits, exclusively use the water taken from king coconuts.

Although Sri Lankans do consume the water of the young green coconut (which Sri Lanka has in more abundance than even Thailand does!) king coconut is most certainly the preferred choice on the island, among young and old.

Relished for its refreshing taste, king coconut water contains a better balance of sweetness in comparison to regular coconut water. It also contains electrolyte levels much closer to that of human plasma, making it an excellent re-hydrant (see our answer to question 13, below).

As for harvesting methods, mature green coconuts, used by most leading brands, are broken off coconut trees, using a long pointed stick. Once broken, they fall on to the ground beneath, where they sometimes lie for days, baking under the scorching sun, before their water is extracted and their kernel is scraped out for consumption.

On the other hand, king coconuts are harvested with much more care. They are hand-plucked at their optimum level of maturity by skilled coconut tree climbers who climb up the tree and cut clusters of them using a specialized blade, which are then carefully lowered to the ground using a rope, ensuring that no damage is effected on their way down.

You will also love that we, at Tropic Fruits, bottle our king coconut water on the same day as when the king coconuts are harvested and delivered to us at our facility – so King Coconut® is as ‘fresh off the tree’ as it gets!
4
IS THERE ADDED SUGAR IN KING COCONUT IF SO, WHAT KIND AND HOW MUCH?
King coconut water, in its natural form, contains sucrose, fructose and glucose. Due to its natural occurrence, however, it is possible for the levels of these natural constituents of king coconut water to vary from one king coconut to another, even where they belong to the same cluster, and grew off the same tree! Furthermore, like other naturally occurring beverages, king coconut water has a sense of terroir. As such, the natural constituents of king coconut water may also vary depending on the soil composition, and climate etc in which the tree it was taken from grew.

Given these factors, we add no sugar whatsoever where we find that the king coconut water we extract for bottling at our facility already contains sufficient natural sugar. Where, however, we find it does not, we add a small amount of cane sugar (less that 1%) to maintain consistency in taste, from batch to batch.
5
ARE THERE ANY ADDED PRESERVATIVES IN KING COCONUT?
No.
6
DO YOU ADD ANY WATER TO THE NATURAL KING COCONUT YOU USE?
Absolutely no dilution is done. King Coconut® contains 100% juice.
7
DO YOU ADD ANY FLAVORS (ARTIFICAL OR NATURAL) TO THE NATURAL KING COCONUT WATER YOU USE?
No flavors whatsoever are added.
8
IS KING COCONUT MADE FROM CONCENTRATE?
Never.
9
IS THE KING COCONUT WATER YOU USE OBTAINED FROM NON-GMO KING COCONUTS?
Most certainly! As stated in our answer to question 1, above, king coconut trees grow freely in Sri Lanka with little or no human intervention. Drive along the coastal belt of the island and you will see king coconut trees, with their bright orange fruits, in abundance. They are hard to miss!
10
IS KING COCONUT GLUTEN FREE?
Yes! Our facility is dedicated solely to producing bottled king coconut water and king coconut water contains no gluten.
11
DO KING COCONUT WATER BOTTLES CONTAIN ANY COCONUT MEAT?
No. Unlike the green coconut, the king coconut does not have much meat in it, unless it is at an overly mature state when plucked. As more fully described in our answer to question 3, above, king coconuts are plucked when they are yet tender and have very little or no meat in them. It is at this level of maturity, which is considered optimum, that king coconuts have the highest levels of electrolytes.

12
WHAT ARE THE LITTLE WHITE FLOATING PARTICLES IN MY DRINK?
These are minute particles which constitute the unique king coconut flavor, which, when clustered together, become visible. If they were to be removed, the natural king coconut taste would be lost.
13
WHAT ARE ELECTROLYTES?
Electrolytes are minerals, such as calcium, chloride, magnesium, phosphate, potassium and sodium, which are present in blood, sweat and other bodily fluids.

We lose electrolytes (particularly sodium and potassium) when we sweat during exercise or when we suffer from vomiting or diarrhea. Such a loss of electrolytes must be made up for in order to prevent the body from cramping or becoming dehydrated and fatigued.

King Coconut® is a powerful re-hydrant, given that its natural electrolyte levels are almost identical to those found in the human body. It is also an ideal hangover remedy and can even be used as part of a refreshing fruit smoothie.

One bottle of King Coconut® contains more magnesium and calcium than an orange, and more potassium than a banana.
14
WHAT IS THE SHELF LIFE OF A BOTTLE OF KING COCONUT?
9 months, if stored at a temperature less than 104 degrees Fahrenheit (or 40 degrees Celsius). Its shelf life may be extended if stored at 39.2 degrees Fahrenheit (or 4 degrees Celsius).

Always be mindful of the expiry date printed on the bottle. If the bottle is purchased off of a refrigerator, ensure to store the same at 39.2–46.4 degrees Fahrenheit (or 4–8 degrees Celsius) to keep it fresh until the stated expiry date.

As King Coconut® is a highly nutritious beverage, it could easily be contaminated by micro-organisms present in the air. Bearing this in mind, King Coconut® should be consumed within 30 minutes of opening.

Do not consume King Coconut® where the safety cap on its lid has popped up.
15
WHAT IS MEANT BY ‘SINGLE ORIGIN’?
This means the king coconut water comes from a single geographical area (as opposed to being taken from multiple countries around the world and being mixed together subsequently).

The fact that King Coconut® water is ‘single origin’ means the consumer’s taste buds get to have a more consistent experience, from batch to batch. As described in our answer to question 4, above, it is almost impossible to obtain an absolutely consistent taste, without losing the natural flavor of the beverage. And this is especially the case when coconut water is taken from different places to produce a single drink.
16
ARE THERE ANY OTHER BENEFITS IN DRINKING KING COCONUT WATER?
Yes! King Coconut® contains naturally occurring bioactive enzymes which help digestion and metabolism, and organic compounds which have growth promoting properties. King coconut water is also known to clear up the urinary path and increase semen production, is often used in ayurvedic treatments in Sri Lanka, and is recommended for pregnant and nursing mothers.
17
IS THE PACKING MATERIAL ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY?
Yes! The glass bottles and caps can be recycled. The shrink-wrap is made from most environmentally friendly polymer PETG. Not only is our packaging material environmentally friendly, the entire bottling plant is green in that all the king coconut shells accumulated every day are used to produce mulch and compost. The waste water is treated and re-used for irrigation of one of our farms.
